JDH Morgans The Dream

This Morgan dream began when I was just a young girl. My father had decided to visit Aubrey Kubbernus, who owned Kodiak Morgans, in search for 2 yearling fillies for my sister and I. My sister and I were very young and tiny at the time. When we stood next to Aubreys BIG bodied Morgan mares we were very intimidated by their size, even his yearlings! His horses were EVERYTHING a Morgan should be.

They were conformationally correct, had substance, amazing bone and the incredible look at me presence. Simply GORGEOUS horses! Their kind, loving and gentle ways would win ANYONE over. Our father thought it was best to choose 2 mares already in foal. That way we could gradually get used to the mares size and learn how to ride with the mares eventually.

He chose 2 of the most gentle, kind, sweet natured mares that were in foal to Beams Bold Commando and due shortly. He chose these 2 mares as they adored my sister and I. He explained to us that IF the mares produced fillies we would be able to keep the fillies as our OWN. If the mares produced colts, they would have to be sold.

His reasoning for the “filly only” rule is because he was looking into the future. He knew we would want to keep our horses for life. That meant through our childhood, our teen years, college years, etc. Since so many young girls have to part with their beloved horse when they go away to school, he didn’t want that for us. He didn’t want us to have THAT heart ache of saying good bye to our best friend in that way. Sometimes people have to part with their horse when they go to school as it’s a financial burden to try and juggle caring for the horse as well as schooling fees.

He wanted us to be able to have our fillies as LIFE partners. To bond and have a best friend throughout our life as well as theirs.

Through good times and the obstacles that we would encounter throughout our life. He explained that the fillies would be mares by the time we went away for school (college, or university).

We would be able to breed the mares in return and sell the foal to help with the mares upkeep during the year(s) we were away. If the mare later on in life should become injured or no longer able to be ridden, we could breed the mare to produce a replacement for herself.

The mare could then retire to pasture if we chose. He knew either way these mares would stay with us for life. This was the best suited situation for my sister and I. We were young and just learning about horses. Our father had chosen a 3rd horse at the time.

A gorgeous yearling filly, another Beams Bold Commando daughter. She was his “back up” plan just in case one of the mares foaled a colt. My sister and I had chosen and agreed that she would have Babes foal and I would have Sheba’s foal. Sheba foaled first on April 18th.

A beautiful healthy bay filly. Days later Babe who had ONLY ever foaled out colts the entire time wonderful friends with Aubrey.

My sister and I would stay for weeks at a time with him and his wife, learning about Morgans. Learning the Morgan bloodlines, about breeding, etc. We would ride his mature and young stock for him. Our mares were pastured with his Morgans various times over the years.

Many times, my sister and I would help Aubrey start his young stock under saddle. We went on several trail rides together. We always looked forward to going on the “It Shouldn’t Hurt To Be a Child” trail ride each year with Aubrey. It was a trail ride my family and Aubrey held dear to our hearts. We would go weeks before the ride and clear the trails together on our Morgan stock.

This was a 20+ mile trail ride welcome to riders, wagons, etc. All ages and breeds welcome. We have many memories showing our horses together at shows. We were able to grow up with Aubrey’s stallions Speed King, Beam Bold Commando, and Timberline Coal in our lives! We later had foals from each of his stallions and our mares we purchased from Aubrey over the years.

My family was truly blessed to have met Aubrey with Kodiak Morgans. Blessed to have been taken under his wing and learn about the Morgan breed. It was HIS breeding program and his kindness that gave me the dream to start our own program someday. Sadly, Aubrey owned her, had a gorgeous flaxen chestnut filly for my sister on April 27th. (Babe never did foal another filly after this foal, only colts).

My sister and I were inseparable from our foals from Kodiak Morgans. We were able to grow with our foals and learn. We were the only ones to train them from foals up to mature mounts with supervision of course. The only
people to ride our mares as well, never an adult.

We had become meet him. He was truly a wonderful gentleman.

JDH Morgans The Dream

Fast forward….

Over the years I kept my stock from Kodiak Morgans. I had a couple AQHA as well. I later met Jamie Hackett. Jamie and his family bred Horned Herefords and used AQHA stock. Jamie had grown up with Registered Percherons and Registered AQHA throughout his life. He had discovered his love for the Morgan breed following the Morgan world lost an incredible breeder and contributor to the breed, as we lost our dear friend to an tragic accident.

He will be forever missed by many but his selective breeding program carries on throughout todays bloodlines.

Aubrey undoubtably stamped this breed with his quality Morgan stock he produced and left an impression as such a delightful fellow to anyone who was blessed to meet INCREDIBLE Morgans:

Our “Beams Dream Maker Stallion”.

He is a stallion that it doesn’t matter the time of day or through the night… you can jump on him with a halter and lead if need be, to check cattle. He’s always willing and soft. The stallion adores children and will be patient with a child learning to ride with supervision. The stallion LOVES his job and HIS family.

Morgans become valued as FAMILY. They are YOUR partner in life, YOUR equal. YOUR best friend. They are reliable, dependable and TRUSTWORTHY mounts. It was at this point Jamie and I had decided to sell our AQHA stallion and mares who we adored. We then decided to concentrate our Morgan program.

The 2nd horse “Duke” was a past Morgan gelding I had sold as a youngster and that had come back to us to be started under saddle for his owner.

Jamie started Duke with a ranch start. The gelding was courageous and brave. Extremely easy to start under saddle. Duke was willing to learn and eager to please. Natural cow sense! Duke proved to be a “breath of fresh air” for Jamie while working cattle. The 3rd horse “Sapphire”. One of the most talented and versatile mounts we own.

Jamie can pull her from pasture… work cattle, bath right after and my niece can take to a show. Sapphire will naturally pack our sons Rhyland and Rhett around calmly and as precious cargo. It doesn’t matter what you ask of this mare she always willing. She caters to the rider’s needs. JUST when you think this mare in life, YOUR equal. YOUR best friend.

They are reliable, dependable and TRUSTWORTHY mounts. It was at this point Jamie and I had decided to sell our AQHA stallion and mares who we adored, should be getting tired after a full day’s work, she will go into overtime for you. Giving you 110% of herself to you even into the night.

What Jamie and I noticed is that we both love all breeds of horses. Every breed has a purpose and no breed is better than the other. We both appreciate a good AQHA. The difference for us with AQHA and our western working Morgans is that the Morgans are extremely easy to train because they are PEOPLE horses. They truly thrive on the attention of their human. Without hesitation they would give their life for their human if asked.

Morgans are EXTREMELY versatile and have raw natural talent to excel in whatever discipline you ask. The movement of a Morgan is smooth, fluent, and seemingly effortlessly to them. Morgans tend to train out completely differently than a AQHA. They are sensitive but adaptive to your feelings and movement. You cannot ask for better disposition then that of a Morgan horse.

JDH Morgans The Dream

The Morgans become valued as FAMILY. They are YOUR partner.

We then decided to concentrate our Morgan program. We personally discovered that it would take AQHAs of the finest training to put in a full hard day of work, where it would take ONE Morgan. Both are wonderful breeds of horses. Both incredibly talented. Both breeds we appreciate for our own reasons. For us without question the Morgan breed is where our hearts are!

Since Jamie and I have this admiration, and appreciation for what the Morgan breed is and can do. We gave each of our sons their own Morgan.

Rhyland (4 years old), was given a beautiful chestnut filly named JDH Pistol Annie (Beams Dream Maker & JDH Pistol Annie).

Rhett (2 years old), was given a gorgeous bay filly named JDH Sippin On Fyre (C-My Golden Hawk & PKT Coffee Beam).

Our sons are already bonding with their fillies and will learn to grow with them over the years.

JDH Morgans is located in the beautiful Rainy River District. (Stratton, Ontario. Canada). Our Registered Pure bred Morgans are used for our personal ranching program with our Horned Hereford cattle.

Our Morgans are western working. Some of our bloodlines consist of Flyhawk, Waseeka, Beamington, Speed King, Bar LT, Oak Acres, and Ramuls Justin. Our goal has always been to produce western working “ranching” riding horses with correct conformation, amazing bone, stellar movement, and incredibly passive dispositions. This makes our Morgans not only sensible, and agile …but VERSATILE for everyday ranching and family mounts.
